Another wet and windy weekend caused yet another late cancellation on Saturday, this time at Otley. Thankfully there was a match to anticipate on Sunday: a trip to Northumberland to witness the start of the Yorkshire U20 campaign for 2016. Even in the short time ickledot has been photographing Yorkshire, the matches played between these two teams have been both memorable and high-scoring: the group game two years ago at Northern Rugby Club followed by a reunion in the Final at Twickenham are just a couple of examples
On this occasion the venue was Morpeth Rugby Club. By kick off at 2.15 the skies had cleared somewhat and the rain held off for the duration. However, there was no respite from the wind. It was to have a major effect on the game, making kicking difficult and expansive passing rugby almost impossible. It was Yorkshire's turn to play against it first. They did well, moving into a 10-3 lead with two tries, before Northumberland crossed the line themselves and converted to level the scores right on half time.
Playing with the wind, Yorkshire went up a couple of gears in the second half, assuming dominance in scrum and lineout to notch further tries including the all-important bonus score. The match finished 30-10 in Yorkshire's favour. There's a more detailed (and accurate) account of the game here. Overall, a satisfactory afternoon's work for a Yorkshire squad which fully recognises there's room for further improvement.
It was a good afternoon for photographing too; much attacking action, some pleasing side-on action and equal starring roles for forwards and backs. You can see more photos of the game on Flickr.
