As forecast on Sunday, ickledot's first photographing of women's rugby in 2016 came on a cold, blustery and ultimately wet evening at West Park Leeds Rugby Club. There was even snow over the hills on the drive home, perhaps making the Canadian players, facing two of our county's best sides, feel at home.
The tourists, from Winston Churchill High School, were part way through a visit which has so far taken in Scotland and the Lake District. This squad effectively played two half games on the night; one against West Park Leeds and the other against Castleford. Readers will remember ickledot's last coverage of women's rugby, Under 15 and 18 games against Cheshire just before Christmas. Several girls who'd featured in those games were playing for the 'home' sides.
Both games were keenly fought and there was much open attacking play from visitors and Tykes alike - especially pleasing to see given the cold and wet conditions. West Park Leeds came from behind to secure victory in the end while Castleford, perhaps taking advantage of a side which was beginning to tire against its second set of opponents, had a more emphatic win.
All in all it was a great evening, rounded off with a communal meal which included a very tasty lasagne. As usual, you can see more pictures from the games here.
