As mentioned previously, a mid week afternoon in Weetwood to witness the annual Varsity match between Leeds Beckett and Leeds University women's rugby teams. This formed part of a Varsity Day in which the two universities clash across a whole host of sports. There was tension in the air as both teams limbered up on a bright, warm but breezy afternoon.
Leeds University began strongly, passing the ball accurately and achieving a number of turnovers. This domination culminated in a try. To add to Beckett's woes, a loose pass brought a further try for the University side, this time converted.
From a photography point of view, this brought something of a dilemma. It was Beckett who had invited ickledot to photograph so he'd dutifully sat behind the try line they were attacking, seeing (and photographing) very little close action for the first twenty minutes.
He had just begun plans to move when Beckett broke through from midfield and scored their first try right under the posts, bringing relief to both them and the photographer.
By half time Beckett had the lead with two further converted tries. However, the game wasn't done as Leeds University recovered and scored two of their own tries, regained the lead and set nerves jangling in the Beckett camp. If ickledot's maths is correct, an unconverted try wide on the left brought the score to 26 for both teams.
Just as it seemed the game was winding down to a draw, Beckett struck on the right with a try that formed the final play. With the extra two points, the final score was 33-26 to Beckett. A great match for both teams and congratulations to Beckett. You can see more pictures from the game here.
The late afternoon traffic necessitated an early exit for ickledot from the wider Varsity proceedings, but not before he'd photographed his very first few shots of rugby league. Here's a try from Leeds University.
